Diwali Sparkles. Handwoven ultra fine cotton and bamboo shawl in the colours of India. The shawl features sequins and handmade sequin thread for effect.

The base of the shawl is blocks of pink, copper and orange in ultra fine cotton. The shawl has been woven in ultra fine bamboo in orange tones, purples and blues (blocks and stripes). All of these different elements give the cloth movement and versatility.

To add that special unique touch sequins were inserted randomly into woven pockets while weaving. This is done by hand, row by row.

In addition handmade sequin thread has been inserted. This sparkling sequin yarn is a special creation, handcrafted by the talented weaving families of West Bengal, India. Each petite sequin is carefully threaded onto a single cotton end, then knotted with two other strands, truly epitomizing the art of slow yarn. This thread is limited in amounts and only used in special projects I design.

This is a delicate unique piece. The drape is exceptional as the bamboo gives the shawl a silky feel and soft and supple substance. The shawl has a sheerness to it that makes it lightweight and elegant.

The shawl has been hand washed and draped dried using a drying rack, then gently pressed.

Materials: Ultra fine 16/2 cotton, ultra fine 16/2 bamboo. 8mm sequins. Handmade sequin thread. Eyelash fringe. Hand wash only. Gentle iron.

This one-off piece is Work 227. I never weave the exact same cloth or item twice. Every piece is unique and numbered, every creation has a story to tell.

The cotton I buy is from Maurice Brassard in Québec. This is one of the world’s finest cotton spun yarns. Cotton is a natural fibre that is soft, breathable and absorbent. Cotton can be cool, yet offer warmth, is strong, and can stand up against abrasion wear and high temperature. In one word, cotton is comfortable.

Bamboo is a renewable resource and has properties making it breath, and comfortable to wear. It takes dye very well, so the colours are deep and rich. Bamboo has the look of silk but at a much lower price point. The raw material is derived exclusively from the pulp of bamboo trees grown under sustainable agricultural practices. Because the base is consistently lighter than that of pulp taken from typical trees harvested for common rayon, the production of the Bamboo yarn I use is subject to less chemical treatment than that usually applied to the production of common rayon.
